Quantifying environmental implications of surplus food redistribution to reduce food waste

چکیده

Ensuring access to food for the most vulnerable is one of objectives UN 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development. Rethinking production and distribution systems in light this need makes it imperative limit environmental burden supply chains meet increasing demand a rapidly growing world population. One important problems waste, which leads huge waste resources foodstuffs that end up not fulfilling function they were produced. A powerful strategy address problem recovery redistribution still edible socially economically disadvantaged people. In article Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied study burdens benefits following attributional consequential LCA approaches. Data on surplus recovered collected from local charities impact their activities compared with treatment by incineration, anaerobic digestion composting. All midpoint categories ReCiPe (hierarchist) are considered life cycle assessment 1 kg wasted or donated. The highlights great variability locally, respect quantity type. animal-based has greatest (e.g. 70% CO2 eq/kg scenario). Food donation reduces average studied 1.9 net benefit). However, efficient mechanisms required, terms sizing, consumptions logistics, ensure significant improvement over treatment.

The potential of food preservation to reduce food waste.

While we state it seems unthinkable to throw away nearly a third of the food we produce, we still continue to overlook that we are all very much part of this problem because we all consume meals. The amount of food wasted clearly has an impact on our view of what we think a sustainable meal is and our research suggests food waste is a universal function that can help us determine the sustainabi...

Using food redistribution to reduce packing in children with severe food refusal.

Positive- and negative-reinforcement-based procedures typically have targeted acceptance for children with severe food refusal; however, these procedures do not always result in successful swallowing. Once acceptance is achieved, some children expel the food repeatedly or pack (hold or pocket) it in their mouths for extended periods of time. This study evaluated the effects of using food redist...

Quantifying and valuing post-consumer food waste in South Africa

Food waste is problematic on a number of levels; including the loss of a potentially valuable food source or resource for use in other processes; wasted resources and emissions in the food supply chain; and problems associated with the disposal of organic waste to landfill. We quantify the post-consumer food waste stream in South Africa, in order to bring attention to the magnitude of the probl...

Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Food Waste and Model Food Waste Compounds

Solid waste is generated at a rate of more than 4 lb per person per day. A significant portion of the non-recyclable waste is food waste, with high water content and low energy density. While most thermochemical conversion processes require a relatively dry feedstock, hydrothermal liquefaction uses subcritical water as the reaction medium and is therefore compatible with high-moisture feedstock...
